The start of a "Journey..."
Lets start with Halo Wars the start of the video game story line. So in the beginning (before the game) where the humans were winning and the Covenant were losing badly. But after some time, the number of victories were shorting. The Covenant were winning to where the humans were almost losing. Planets were being glassed. And the planet Harvest was taken by the Covenant. However after all of that the humans in the ship Spirit of Fire to retake Harvest. (In the year 2531 is where this game takes role 21 years before the events of Halo: Reach.) But after they had taken part of the planet Sergeant John Forge discovered that the Covenant were looking for something. He didn't know what exactly what they were look for. But it turn out that the San 'Shyuum or more commonly know as the Prophet of Regret also the youngest of the three High Prophets was looking for forerunner artifacts. But the Covenant were attacked by the humans. Soon after the human Professor Ellen Anders wanted to see for herself what was on the planet that the Covenant was trying to defend. She found out it wasn't like anything she had seen before. But off course the Covenant launched a counter attack against the humans, and Professor Anders being true to her word returned to the Spirit of Fire if she was in any danger. After that the Captain Cutter was ordered to head somewhere else, but Professor Anders convinced him that the humans needed to get to the planet Arcadia before the Covenant do. Before the human landings the Prophet of Regret as a hologram and the Arbiter were walking together. The Arbiter says that the Humans are getting closer but the Prophet of Regret doesn't care. He seems to care more about the "information" that the Arbiter gathered. The Prophet of Regret says that they nee to protect the information and orders the Arbiter to destroy "this place." At first refuses. Regret interupts him and says, "The Great Journey requires sacrifce!" The Arbiiter having no choice obeys.
When they arrive however there is a Covenant invasion occurring. Captain Cutter ordered Sergeant Forge to help with the evacuation of civilians. After the evacuation Forge needed to retreat. With him were a few Spartans. Shortly after Spartan Omega Team helped Forge win a unlikely battle to win. The current appointed Arbiter walking along side the Prophet of Regret was asking him to take all of their forces to assault the humans. But the Prophet refused, fearing that they will be defenseless if they the Arbiter does so. Then the Prophet approached a sort of computer with unknown alien symbols. Getting the idea that the human Professor Anders is the key to the "Path."
Still clearing the planet of the Covenants grip, the humans discovered a large shielded area, also known as the Dome of Light were the Covenant were building something secret and wanted protected. They used prototype vehicles called Rhinos. When they disabled the shield the humans built a base inside, only discovering an incomplete Super Scarab. Forge didn't get any air support. He used a lot of fire power to destroy it. Forge being stuck on the ground won another unlikely battle to win. Professor Anders needed to research a certain. Then suddenly Ripa 'Moramee or otherwise known as the Arbiter almost killed Sergeant Forge. But Anders threw herself in between them and said "I'll come quietly if you let him live." The Arbiter agreeing takes Anders by her head and is lifted up a a Covenant dropship or more commonly known as a Spirit. Serina, the Spirit of Fire's A.I. barely tracked the vessel and Captain Cutter ordered that they would rescue Anders. The reason being is because she was a good scientist, knows a lot about the unknown alien symbols and knows a lot about the Covenant. When they got to the last known location of Anders signal, Serina detected almost no Covenant signals on the planet. Serina couldn't figure out where they were in the galaxy. So Sergeant Forge was sent to the planet to clear the Covenant forces, rescue ECHO and INDIA squads, build a base and escort them out of the area. (For this part of the story he brings a Elephant with him and trains infantry out of it. Lets be realistic and say he brought multiple squads of marines!) Bringing marines he, at first encounters Covenant. But soon as he heads for ECHO and INDIA, he loses their signals, and it wasn't the Covenant. And when he loses their signals they lose them fast. So as Forge and his marines head for ECHO they encounter a unknown alien life form.
Captain Cutter: "Covenant? I'm not reading any Brute signatures."
Forge: "Not Covenant sir, - something else, something worse, much uglier."
This is the Flood. The main antagonist in the entire Halo series, books, video games, movies everything. Forge was encountering the Flood. He also noted that some of the "forms" they were taking were similar to their humans. Serina also said,
"Well, that's new. And scary. These organisms are...interesting. Our database has nothing on their origins - or, well, anything about them, really. At first glance, they appear to be a species of virulent, parasitic organisms that thrive by consuming other sentient life of sufficient biomass."
So this means that the Flood can take many forms of almost any life form. The Flood also have "feelings" similar to a human. So that is why they aren't your typical Nazi Zombies because they can use weapons and even talk. And the infections spread extremely fast.

Proto-Gravemind from Halo Wars
_ Anyways Forge eventually rescued INDIA and ECHO and went back to the
Spirit of Fire. But their problems with the Flood weren't over. A group a
Spartans also known as Red Team. They were looking for Anders and their
warthog crashed. So once again Forge sends an entire army to rescue Red
Team. But when Forge gets to Red Team he faces a Proto-Gravemind. Which basically controls the Flood in a sense. If they destroyed a Flood colony then the Proto-Gravemind would get weaker. But the Flood can regenerate themselves so the Proto-Gravemind would be harder to kill if the colonies weren't destroyed. It also was blocking Anders signal as well. When it was destroyed all the other creatures were dying. But once it was destroyed Serina picked up another signal East of their position. The signal was under an ocean. When Serina finds out what the signal was the ocean splits in two and the Spirit Of Fire is sucked into a sort of docking system. At the same time the Arbiter brought Professor Anders to the Prophet of Regret. The Prophet of Regret was underestimating the humans. Then one of the honor Zealot guards reports that a human ship was detected. The Arbiter ordered the Honor Elite Guards to escort the Prophet of Regret to High Charity, the Covenant super city. Back to the Spirit of Fire. Captain Cutter ordered the rest of his troops on board. But of course their escape paths are blocked by air born Flood or swarms. After Forge uses an army to get the three platoons out, they head for the Spirit of Fire. The Flood somehow follow the Pelicans to the Spirit Of Fire and start infecting the outer armor of the ship. Forge is ordered to clear it up. Then a new enemy/friend starts attacking you and the Flood. They are the Sentinels. They were Forerunner based technology, the reason being that they are robots is so they can't get infected by the Flood. Since Forge can't completely clear the Flood infections the Sentinels have to most of the work by using cleansing waves to wipe out any dormant Flood forms. Once the ship was cleared off the Spirit of Fire was about to make their escape a Covenant vessel damages their core by slamming into each other. Forge using Cyclops to repair the ship, the Spirit of Fire made their escape.
Professor Anders was being held by the Arbiter to a spherical object with strange symbols. Anders hoping she would get killed so she couldn't unlock the terminal, is forced to put her hand to it and what it does is it activates some sort of forerunner army of ships that the Prophet of Regret needed. As the ships were rising into the sky the Elites were distracted and she teleported out of the Apex. Forge saves her from the Flood. So Forge has to get Professor Anders to the Spirit of Fire. So Forge has Spartan Red team at his command. While Anders is transported out of the Shield World. Forge yet again wins another battle that he shouldn't have won with (even with an army) by destroying and occupying four bases and taking control of a Scarab until the area is clear. After Anders reaches the Spirit of Fire, she figures out how to destroy the Shield World and the Forerunner ships. By taking the Spirit of Fire's FTL drive (Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine, or more commonly referred to as a Slipspace Drive) to send it to the core and blow the planet to pieces. The plan was to get the FTL drive to the top of the Apex site. The FTL drive was supposed to make to sun overload and implode (implode is the same as explode, but the "explosion" sucks all objects making it implode. Im means inside if you are still confused.) As two Pelicans were carrying the drive to the site, banshees shoot down the Pelicans. Captain Cutter doesn't want to risk the core anymore so he orders Forge to get the core to the Apex site with Elephants. Destroying Covenant bases he barley gets the core to the Apex teleporter where it disappears, then reappears at another site. So as Forge, a marine and three Spartans are working on the FTL drive a marine pushes a forerunner button. At the same time a Spartan notices a massive force of Honor Guard Elites charging with their Energy Staves (let me know if it is "staffs" or "staves.") The Spartans successfully and easily take care of them as Forge battles the Arbiter. Losing against the Arbiter, he punches Forge in his stomach, grabs his energy sword and starts walking over to him. The Arbiter telling Forge that his face will be the last thing Forge sees, Forge pulled out his combat knife and stabbed him in his neck. Chocking, and distracted dropping his energy sword, Forge picks it up and stabs him through the stomach. As they were cleaning the bodies one of the Spartans noticed that the core was already overheating. Therefore someone will have to activate it manually. Though the Spartan volunteers Forges says that they will need all the Spartans they can get. As the Spartans leave Forge contacts them later and says that they have 30 minutes before Covenant forces get to his position inside the sun (which is artificial. After unlocking each interlock which only responds to human touch the rest of the UNSC forces get aboard the Spirit of Fire and they have to get out of there before the sun implodes. Captain Forge impossibly ordered Serina to slingshot around the sun because the gravity radius was decreasing. Barley missing the sun they slingshot around it and head for lightspeed. As the sun is getting destroyed by itself it implodes destroying everything in site.
As everyone is in their cryo-pods professor Anders refuses to get in her cryo-tube. Captain Cutter states that there hasn't been any sign of any Covenant for weeks. He orders he into her cryo-tube and activates it. Captain Cutter look at the one next to hers (or a few down, I can't remember) the tube has John Forge's name on it. Indicating he sacrificed himself to save everyone else.
In the legendary cutscene for those who can't beat the game on legendary (like me, but beat every other Halo including Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary with no skulls on! It was hard as hell but still got!) all the cutscene says is,
Serina: Captain, wake up. Something has happened.
That's all it says which is a little disappointing because it is only six words with no visuals. But I guess 343 Industries is smart because they don't want people to know too much about Halo Wars 2. (But knowing Serina she was probably just joking around!)
